Meet Abbey Gardens, near King Alfred’s Statue
Ramblers Walk leader: Harry Mycock
Artists: Painters Robert Brooks and Tim Craven
Early on this walk there will be a zig-zag climb up on to St Giles Hill where the views may be taken in and it can be appreciated why this is a popular vantage point for artists wishing to capture an iconic view of Winchester. The historic St Giles Graveyard will be another stopping point on the walk. After crossing the Spitfire Bridge over the M3 we enter the South Downs National Park and should be treated to a display of cowslips and views back to Winchester and to St Catherine’s Hill as well as towards the Downs with the South Downs Way below us. We descend through gates and a couple of stiles and a short chalk slope to then cross the busy A31. We join the cycle route for the South Downs Way sharing the country lane into Chilcomb.
Chilcomb church provides an ideal pausing to hear more from the artists about their craft and task related of capturing aspects and interpretations of the South Downs Way.
Chilcomb church is a gem and is usually open.
There is limited parking at the Church which is usually open until dusk that could be used by those simply wanting to join the walk and talks at Chilcomb.
The walk then takes us along a field edge to join the flat walkers' route on the South Downs Way back to Winchester and our start point.
