Johannes Vermeer (1632–1675) was a Dutch Baroque painter celebrated for his masterful use of light, colour, and perspective. Though relatively obscure during his lifetime, Vermeer is now considered one of the greatest painters of the Dutch Golden Age. He is best known for intimate, meticulously composed interior scenes, such as Girl with a Pearl Earring and The Milkmaid.
