Workshop outline:
To introduce participants to the medium of gouache and use it to create a detailed, layered textile pattern inspired by the Dutch wax prints central to Yinka Shonibare's exploration of cultural identity, post-colonialism, and globalisation.

Beginner to Intermediate artists interested in pattern design, colour theory, and historical context in art.

We will explore:

  • Articulate the complex cultural significance of Dutch wax print fabrics as used by Yinka Shonibare.
  • Deconstruct and sketch layered textile patterns using geometric principles.
  • Execute core gouache techniques, including achieving opacity and precise edge work.
  • Develop a personal colour palette and apply it to create a dynamic, flat pattern study.

Through the workshop we aim to achieve:
• A completed gouache pattern study inspired by Shonibare's textiles.
• Proficiency in gouache mixing and application techniques.
• A deeper understanding of how art, fabric and pattern can be used as a medium for social and historical commentary.
