Award winning architectural artist and illustrator Peter Jarvis will be running two masterclasses at the Arc this summer. Book tickets to one, or both, to learn expert techniques in watercolour painting.

Choose from
Session 1 (Watercolour with Line & Wash),
or Session 2 (Perspective with Watercolour),
...or treat yourself to both!

Session 1: Watercolour with Line & Wash
Learn how to compose a scene considering various elements that complete a view.

Level: beginner/improver

This workshop aims to give insight into setting up a composition using photographic reference as an inspiration. Demonstration and individual practice in the application of watercolour to simple shapes will be the starting point in handling the medium. This will lead on to picture-making techniques to show proportion and scale. Demonstrations and individual practice will introduce how aerial perspective can help when looking at recession and depth within a composition.

Task one
Laying a flat and graduated watercolour wash.

Task two
Experimenting with colour combinations; wet into wet mixing and overlaying colour onto dry paper; aerial perspective and atmosphere.

Task three
Drawing and painting from reference photographs supplied, looking at applications in built and natural landscape. How to bring atmosphere into your composition; working from light to dark; warm and cool colours; complimentary colours; creating texture and colour harmony; looking for that “magic moment”. Working quickly and identifying when it’s time to stop!

Suggested artists for research:
John Singer Sargent
Rowland Hilder
J M W Turner
John Constable

Session 2: Perspective with Watercolour- learn the secrets of perspective and how to observe and represent built forms in the landscape.

Level: beginner/improver

This workshop aims to give insight into how an understanding of basic linear perspective can help when drawing built form in the landscape. Drawing exercises will take the class through ways of creating the illusion of 3D form and depth within a picture.  Demonstrations and individual practice will introduce basic watercolour exercises to show light and form across geometrical surfaces.

Task One
From the wooden blocks supplied draw the objects in three ways.

Drawing one
To portray the object life-size

Drawing two
To show the object with the eye level just below the top of the object.

Drawing three
To create the illusion that the object is the size of a building and show it as part of a land/cityscape.

Aspects of one, two and three point perspective will be considered together with viewpoints and compositional elements.

From one or more of the drawings above apply basic watercolour washes looking at light, shade and cast shadow.

Suggested artists for research:
Edward Hopper
Giorgio de Chirico
Ben Johnson

Portrait of Peter Jarvis

Peter is an artist and illustrator working in pencil and watercolour. Peter has a passion for and belief in the sketchbook as a means of understanding his subject matter, the use of which is central to the success of later watercolours. The very nature of the sketchbook in its portability and mobility on location means it is innately suitable in his pursuit, and as a precursor, towards the creation of studio work. Using his in-depth knowledge of perspective in both man-made forms and nature, Peter shows us the importance of viewpoint selection according to weather conditions, lighting, shade and, in particular, using cast shadows to help describe shape and form

Peter Jarvis will also be exhibiting his work in the Arc from 29 Jun 2023 - 13 Aug 2023: Kate Dicker and Pete Jarvis Viewpoints: Time & Place
