About Emma Richardson

Driven by an interest in psychology, sexuality and transcendence, Richardson’s large scale oil paintings explore themes of human drive and connection, the complexities of female desire and the search for ecstatic experience.

Her work draws inspiration from historical and contemporary painting, research into ideas of the dangerous woman, female authority and desire, as well as the human need throughout history to find escape through the transcendental in religion, sport, spirituality, sex, drugs, music, and nature.

Her more recent work focuses on how apocalyptic imagery has been called on and created throughout times, to articulate collective anxieties and to act as a warning or a yearning for salvation.

She plays with how painting can represent both the physical and the metaphysical and it’s ability to conjure the struggle between the spirit of the times - our daily life, societal pressures and current world catastrophes, and the spirit of the depths - our inner world, hidden desires and the collective unconscious.
