An exciting opportunity to sketch period costumes: take advantage of some of the gorgeous period and theatrical clothes which form part of the Hampshire Wardrobe, and be led by artist Kate Dicker to learn observational skills while responding to the costume and model. Explore expressive styles of drawing using a variety of media and to consider the model’s poses as well as being creative and spontaneous.

Both beginners and those with experience are welcome.

Kate Dicker is an artist and printmaker and has been widely exhibited and published. She gained an MA at Winchester in Fine Art Printmaking and is an elected member of both The Society of Wood Engravers and The Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers. Her work is versatile including drawing quickly on location such with working horses and people in industrial settings which are in the collections of The King’s Troop RHA and Hampshire Cultural Trust.

Please note: you will need to bring the following essential materials (these should all be available at WHSmith Winchester, located near The Arc on Parchment St:

  • Paper of any light colour, approx 6-10 sheets of size of your choice: A2 cartridge paper by the sheet (£2.40) or; a pack of 30 sheets, weight 135gsm (£8), or; A3 spiral bound sketch pad of 30 sheets (£9), or; A1 cartridge 2 rolled in a pack (£3.99)
  • Pencil 2B or 3B with sharpener and eraser.
  • A support for the size of paper i.e. a drawing board
  • 2 bulldog clips
  • Promarker illustrator’s pen (£2.50), or a marker pen with a broad nib. Black or any colour.

If you have them please also bring:

  • Coloured pencils or pastels
  • Pastels, soft dry (Box £12)
  • Felt tip pens
  • Free-standing easel

Some charcoal and pastels will be available during the session. Participants can be seated with drawing boards resting on the back of another chair. There are no easels or tables.

The drawing session will start by observing the pose as a whole. We will analyse the proportions and use plumb lines to align the parts. Patterns on the garments will help create structure and form. Kate will then lead a series of drawing exercises that will help to speed up individuals’ drawing abilities. Different drawing medium is encouraged to explore expressions of line.

The three models in costume are volunteers from The Hampshire Wardrobe. The poses will vary between standing and sitting. The longest will be fifteen minutes at any one time.
